Introduction

A manufacturer of MDF boards was facing problems of premature bearing failures every 2-3 months on the work roll of the grinding machine. Shock loads and vibrations significantly impacted on the bearing overall performance. The customer was not satisfied with the short bearing lifetime which caused additional costs for maintenance works and unplanned downtime during production. Standard bearings were used. The customer's requirement was at least one year bearing lifetime in order to be able to do only planned shutdowns and maintenance. NSK engineers studied operation conditions and drawings of the machine. As a result, special Spherical Roller Bearings for vibrating screens were provided for testing. The bearing lifetime was extended to 10.000 hours which met the expected lifetime.
