When Ball Screws reach their rolling fatigue life, scaly particles start to separate from the surface of the raceways and balls resulting in "flaking".

Often premature flaking or abnormal damage may lead to machine failure. Cause of the problem may include careless handling, excessive misalignment, insufficient lubrication or contamination.

The cause can also be a combination of these. However, it is possible to prevent reoccurring failures by making a thorough and complete investigation into a prematurely failed product, its handling methods, installation processes, maintenance history and any operating environment history. All of these factors help to determine the possible cause and countermeasures for future occurrences.
